Lately I have been gravitating towards a monochromatic outfit when getting dressed. There is something about wearing the same color from head to toe that looks so polished and sophisticated to me. Especially in black! An outfit full of pieces in the same hue is a great way to look instantly stylish and flatter any figure. Whether you stick to a neutral color palette or go for a color (like this burgundy look here), there are a few guidelines to go by when styling this silhouette-slimming look…
1. Add Texture
Try to have a variety of fabrics in your outfit to create texture and dimension (i.e. knit sweater with jeans and leather pumps or sweater with leather skirt).
2. Proportions Matter
When wearing one color head to toe you have to be careful not to look like a big blob. While black is always slimming, if you tried a monochromatic royal blue look where the proportions were off, you could look like a smurf or giant blueberry. It is important to balance your look. Since my turtleneck is a chunky knit, I went for skinny jeans and a pointy toe pump. If I was wearing baggy jeans or an A-line skirt, I would opt for a tighter fitting top.
3. Stay in the Same Color Family
While wearing the exact same shade of blue or yellow from head to toe would definitely make a statement and I know there are many of you out there that can pull it off, it is not for everyone. By keeping each piece within a few shades of each other versus the exact same color all over, you create dimension and again prevent yourself from looking like a smurf or giant banana (if you are following #1 the shades will more than likely vary).
4. Choose your Accessories Wisely
Stay away from accessorizing with the same color as your outfit. If I am wearing red head to toe, I would not throw on red earrings and a red statement necklace. Try wearing simple gold or silver jewelry to complement your outfit and provide an effortless overall vibe.
While you probably already have the pieces to pull off a monochromatic outfit in your closet, you may still want to hit up GAP Outlet where I got this black turtleneck for only $5.39 (retails at $54.99!)!! GAP is always a great store for basics and their sale right now is incredible! I snagged this turtleneck in both black and grey and found a V-neck knit in a pretty mint color for only $8.99!
So what do you think of a monochromatic outfit? Do you prefer neutral tones or making a statement in bright colors?
