Master Bedroom Makeover + Tips for Choosing White Paint!

I can’t believe it guys! It finally happened… WE PAINTED OUR MASTER BEDROOM! I have been wanting to completely redo our master bedroom for a solid two years now if not longer. When we moved into our home over six years ago we didn’t change anything in our bedroom and bathroom. It didn’t bother me at first but over the years I realized how odd of a color our bedroom walls were and that our sage green bathroom wasn’t ideal for getting ready everyday… I wanted an update and wanted something that felt clean and fresh. I knew I wanted to paint our walls white but little did I know just how many white paint options are out there…

ENTER EASYCARE PAINT.

I have known about True Value since I was a kid (we had one pretty close to where I grew up) but I only learned about their EasyCare Ultra Premium Paint in the last few months. I had the opportunity to visit with their team while they were here in Dallas, specifically to learn more about EasyCare Paint. I was amazed to see the endless amount of color options and was so thankful for their guidance in choosing a paint color that worked best for me. I took home one of their sample paint kits and several swatches to test at home. Do you know how different a paint color can look in different lighting?! It’s insane.

After looking through their wall of paint colors I took home my top five paint swatches along with a booklet of their white paint options. I thought it was so cool that they had an entire booklet of paint chips you could take home with you to “peel’n place” on your wall. You can see which whites have a more yellow tone, blue, green, etc. and check it throughout the day to see how the colors might change and how it will look against your furniture.

I can’t tell you how many white paint chips I looked at thinking I’d love it only to get it under certain lighting and it look pink or purple! Clearly I needed assistance with this project…

I knew I wanted to stay away from anything yellow and was looking for a crisp white look. I plan to decorate our master bedroom with a velvet grey bed and most likely a white dresser and white nightstands. I feel like our room has been so dark for so long and I am ready for some brightness!

The color we ended up choosing is called EasyCare Paint SNOW GLORY! It is a bright white with the slightest blue tone to it. I am very excited to see how it all looks once we have new furniture in!

THE PROCESS

We still have popcorn ceiling throughout our house (so outdated I know…) so we had to start with removing that and texturizing the ceiling before painting everything else. We started to attack this project ourselves but realized with our work schedules and taking care of Mila, it would probably be best to call in a professional (also with my luck I would have put a hole in our ceiling trying to get the texture off…).

The project took about 3 days.

Day 1= Remove popcorn ceiling

This was done by gently spraying the ceiling with water (garden sprayer will work best) to loosen the texture and then scraped away with a ceiling texture scraper. Be sure to remove all furniture in the room or cover it with plastic to avoid a big mess! I would recommend spraying and scraping the room in sections. You don’t want to spray the whole room, it dry before you get to a certain section and have to keep spraying it. You don’t want the ceiling to absorb too much water and cause any damage.

Once the popcorn texture is scraped off you will need to sand and touch up any areas that may have gotten messed up along the way.

Day 2= Paint the ceiling and crown molding.

We also decided mid project to do our bathroom as well (bye, bye green walls) so day 2 was spent removing popcorn ceiling in the bathroom as well.

Day 3= Paint the walls!

Yay! One of the things I loved about using EasyCare Paint is that it is a paint and primer in one so you didn’t have to mess with priming the walls and then painting… we did two coats of EasyCare Paint Snow Glory in eggshell and used the same color for the ceiling (flat sheen) and crown molding (semi gloss sheen).

I am so happy with how it turned out and cannot wait to start furnishing the room! It is amazing how different our bedroom feels. It’s so much brighter, feels bigger and I honestly feel happier when I walk into it! It’s amazing how something as simple as a paint color can change your mood!

If you have any paint projects coming up I would highly recommend checking out EasyCare paint. It’s low-odor, low-VOC and certified by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) so it’s asthma and allergy-friendly (huge for me since I have both!). You can find it at any True Value stores nationwide as well as many independent paint and hardware stores. Click here to find the closest store to you.

My goal is to get organized and attack our office later this year (it also has popcorn ceiling and is suffering from a poor paint job that we did when we moved in). I think I want to have more fun with the office so if you have any ideas let me know!

I hope this post helped give you a better idea of what it takes to choose a white paint color and makeover a room! Now it’s time to furnish it…
