Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Recipe

This recipe is my mom’s and is something she’s been making for years. I started making it myself around the time Ita and I got married and made a slight update to it… chocolate. If you know me, you know this is not a surprise I added chocolate to something. I mean chocolate makes just about everything better so why wouldn’t I add it to her banana bread? While the banana bread on it’s own IS absolutely delicious (especially when it’s warm with a little butter on top), I think adding chocolate chips takes it to the next level and even Ita (who is not a chocolate person at all) agrees! He seriously asks me to make this anytime he notices we have a few ripe bananas. Here’s how to make it!

Best Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

Homemade banana bread recipe that's been in the family for years now with chocolate chips! You'll definitely want to make this next time you have a few ripe bananas at home!
Course Baking
Servings 24 slices

Ingredients

  • 1-1/4 cup White Sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter softened (1 stick)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1-1/2 cups mashed, very ripe bananas (3-4)
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease bottoms of 2 (8×4 inch) loaf pans. I use a no-stick cooking spray with flour that works great!
  • In a mixer or large bowl, mix together sugar and butter. Add eggs one at a time, mashed bananas, buttermilk and vanilla. Beat on medium speed until smooth.
  • In a separate bowl add flour, baking soda and salt and stir. Add to wet mixture a little at a time. Don't over mix! Stir in chocolate chips.
  • Pour batter into pans and bake for 45 minutes. Check before opening oven to see if it looks done. If not, add 5 minutes. Check with toothpick – if it comes out clean, it's ready!
  • Let cool for 10 minutes. Loosen edges and transfer to cooling rack and let sit for at least 30 minutes before slicing (I rarely last that long before digging in but it's better if it sits an hour before slicing)!
  • Enjoy!!

Notes

*You can definitely make this recipe WITHOUT the chocolate chips, but I think it’s better with them! Also you can add as little or as many as you want.

Does this recipe call for eggs? I don’t see it in the ingredient list?
